Gain an insight into life as a beekeeper and get practical hands on experience with a real hive of honeybees in one of our apiaries in rural Hertfordshire.

Curious about the fascinating world of honeybees? Ever thought of keeping bees yourself? This experience gives you the perfect opportunity to learn more about how to get started with your very own beehive! You will gain an insight into life as a beekeeper, and receive practical, hands-on experience with a real hive of bees in our beginners beekeeping experience session.

The first half of the session will be dedicated to the theory of beekeeping. You will learn the basics of the anatomy of the hive as well as the various roles of honeybees from drones to workers and the Queen. You will gain a good understanding of the beekeeping calendar and the life cycle and harvest cycle of honeybees. We will talk you through the equipment needed to set up your first hive and explain how important safety is around the hives – from choosing a safe site to treating bee stings (and how to avoid them!).

The second half of the session will be all about trying your hand at beekeeping yourself. You will help with a hive inspection, identify the different bees in the colony and hopefully find the Queen! We will also talk you through common problems you may come across including varroa mite, wasps and swarms.

All you need to bring is a sense of adventure and a pair of wellies! Sessions are held outdoors, last for four hours and include a light lunch. We’ll finish the session with a refreshing Hitchin Honey Gin & Tonic made with honey from our own hives. We look forward to welcoming you!
